Alcohol is really the main character in "Endings, Beginnings," its presence felt in almost every scene, and yet nothing is developed, beyond a couple of jokes. That being said, the performances are grounded in in-the-moment reality, and nothing is pushed. Her name is Daphne, and she’s drifting into her thirties in Los Angeles (the ultimate place to drift) while having a love-hate relationship with herself.

Filmmaker Drake Doremus is making himself a specialist in love-hate relationships, a kind of cinema couples therapist in such films as Like Crazy, Breathe In, Equals, and Newness. While she’s made a weak promise to herself (and her older best pal, played by a very welcome Kyra Sedgwick) to abstain from bad stuff like men and drinking for the next few months, all the better to heal up whatever she’s just been through, she can’t ignore the connection she feels with both Jack and Frank.
