what are the similarities between plato’s chariot analogy and freud’s structural model of the mind?
We have here rendered it “spiritedness,” but in truth it encompasses much, much more. Plato/Socrates hit the subject from another angle and metaphor – that of a rational man, lion, and hydra-like beast – in Book IX of the Republic. The ridge of heaven, beyond which he may behold the Forms: essences of things like Beauty, Wisdom, Courage, Justice, Goodness — everlasting Truth and absolute Knowledge. (1888). British philosopher Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) famously stated that “The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” While this would be an oversimplification of the extent of Plato’s contribution to Freudian thought, the connection of the former to the latter is worthy of investigation. What Is the Ego, and Why Is It So Involved in My Life? Some similarities can be seen with Plato’s model. The degree to which the soul falls, and the “rank” of the mortal being it must then be embodied in is based on the amount of Truth it beheld while in the heavens.
Freud’s ego and Plato’s reason are both tasked with harmonizing the parts of the psyche/soul, and for both it is a daunting task.
4. In order to train and harness the power latent in the forces of his soul, a man must understand the nature of his “horses” and how to utilize their strengths and rein in their weaknesses. He often seems flat, sterile, and closed off to others, though often you can sense the bottled impulses bubbling beneath the surface that he’s tried so hard to deny. And the appetites themselves can lead directly to those loftier aims. However, as a psychological fact, this morality is just as compelling as if it were a set of eternal transcendent truths like that of the Platonic morality. For Plato, as is well known, moral standards are objective realities, the so-called “Forms.” Justice, for instance, is a perennial, transcendent concept that can be grasped (“intuited”) by reason. This is the man who lives for nothing higher than to eat good food, get drunk, have sex, and make money. Sometimes Plato's division of the psyche into its three main elements can be easily misunderstood. They lose their wings, and must stay on earth until they regrow – a process which is hastened by remembering what one saw before the fall. The terms are different, but the concepts are basically the same. The superego is akin to the Platonic “noble” spirit by virtue of being a “moral” forbidding principle that tries to prevent (“confine”) the ego from being driven by the id. If you continue to use this site we will assume that you are happy with it. Doing things that remind us of the truths we hold dear keeps us “in flight” and progressing with our lives. There, Plato writes, “the human charioteer drives his in a pair [of horses]; and one of them is noble and of noble breed, and the other is ignoble and of ignoble breed; and the driving of them of necessity gives a great deal of trouble to him.”. For more on this important subject, I highly recommend reading: Hold Fast: How Forgetfulness Torpedos Your Journey to Becoming the Man You Want to Be, and Remembrance Is the Antidote. According to Freud. J. Strachey.
Thus: [W]hen a man's desires violently prevail over his reason, he reviles himself, and is angry at the violence within him, and that in this struggle, which is like the struggle of factions in a State, his spirit is on the side of his reason…. Indeed, the proverbial glue that holds Freud’s systematic thinking together is his division of the human psyche into id, ego, and superego.
I feel an inclination to do something that I think will give me pleasure, but I abandon it on the ground that my conscience does not allow it.
What should I aim for, and what training and practices must I do to achieve those aims? Such “reviling of oneself” is clearly the emotion of guilt (or “moral guilt”), which, according to Freud, is the expression of “the tension between the ego and the superego” (Freud, 1933).
We’ll explore the nature of thumos in-depth next time, but for now, you can read it simply as “spiritedness.” Another way to label the three elements of soul are as the lover of wisdom (charioteer), the lover of gain (dark horse), and the lover of victory (white horse). In particular, Plato’s vision of the tripartite nature of the soul, or psyche, as explained though the allegory of the chariot, is something I have returned to throughout my life. With no check to his behavior, the result can be a giant gut, pickled brains, massive debt, and a prison sentence for corruption. 6. Some who read about it for the first time think it is the same as Freud's division of the psyche into the ego (das Ich), id (das Es), and superego (das Über-Ich), but it isn't the same as Freud's division. • As I will suggest, there is striking symmetry between what Plato says about the human soul and what Freud says about the human psyche. However, Plato may appear to portray reason as stronger, more in control, whereas the Freudian ego is “weak,” “gets its energy from the id,” and “often fails in its tasks” (Freud, 1933). So, Plato also has a theory of guilt arising from the conflict between spirit and desire when reason fails to control the latter. Third, the noble part, which Plato calls “spirit,” is, in turn, “the forbidding principle” which is “on the side of reason” (Plato, 1888). Sigmund Freud, 1921 (Photo in public domain) In Freud’s theory, the mind exists on three levels. A would-be ace charioteer neither entirely indulges his dark horse nor wholly cuts him off. Elliot D. Cohen, Ph.D., is the president of the Logic-Based Therapy and Consultation Institute and one of the principal founders of philosophical counseling in the United States. Thus, the Freudian ego, like the Platonic reason, perceives the moral standards imposed by the superego as having a greater status in comparison to the demands of the id inasmuch as it represents a “higher side of human life.”. To his credit, Ellis was quite candid about this influence. Thus, instead of dissipating his energies in contradictory and detrimental directions, he channels those energies towards his goals. The chariot is pulled by two winged horses, one mortal and the other immortal.
Perhaps Freud’s single most enduring and important idea was that the human psyche (personality) has more than one aspect. From 1920 onward, Freud made the theoretical move of focusing on two big binary principles: life and death.
I read 3 articles on that ti respond to your question, but didn't found the answer.
For a man who is in great joy or in great pain, in his unseasonable eagerness to attain the one and to avoid the other, is not able to see or to hear anything rightly; but he is mad, and is at the time utterly incapable of any participation in reason (my italics). In Book IV of the Republic, a dialog written by Plato about 15 years earlier, Plato (again speaking through Socrates) elaborates the roles of the aforementioned constituents of the human soul: First, the part that directs the soul (“the charioteer”) is “the one with which man reasons,” which “we may call the rational principle of the soul” (Plato, 1888). ". B. Jowett. This is what Freud calls “conscience.” Freud (1933) states. In the latter case, Plato argued, “the best part [Reason] is naturally weak in a man so that it cannot govern and control the brood of beasts within him but can only serve them and can learn nothing but the ways of flattering them.”. What is a man? I am 62 live alone in small apt for 30 years. Each horse has its strengths and weaknesses, and the white horse can lead a man into the wrong path just as the dark horse can, but when properly trained, thumos becomes the ally of the charioteer. An analogy is a comparison between two objects, or systems of objects, that highlights respects in which they are thought to be similar.Analogical reasoning is any type of thinking that relies upon an analogy. The symmetry with the Platonic idea is glaring. The chariot is pulled by two winged horses, one mortal and the other immortal. Many will note the striking similarities between Freud’s theory of the id, ego, and superego and Plato’s division of the soul into the appetitive, rational, and spirited. But each soul force, if properly harnessed and employed, can help a man become eudaimon. While an understanding of the whole allegory and the pondering of it can bring great insight, the ultimate goal of this article is in fact to lay the foundation for two more posts to come in which we will uncover the nature of the one component of Plato’s vision of the soul that has almost entirely been lost to modern men: thumos. Yet he also argued that the dark horse, if properly trained, imparted just as much energy to the pulling of the chariot as the white horse did. Over the years things have accumulated (trying to get ahead)*hoarder*.. got rid of a lot...?
Between the two extremes of unchecked hedonism and the iron-fisted squashing of bodily appetites lies a middle way.
Below we delve into several of the main points. young children are amoral and possess no internal inhibitions against their impulses striving for pleasure. As the horses pull in opposing directions, and the charioteer attempts to get them into sync, his chariot bobs above the ridge of heaven then down again, and he catches glimpses of the great beyond before sinking once more. I dare not claim that such power distinctions are irrelevant, but such distinctions may be lost when the therapeutic goal is to help the dysfunctional psyche (or soul) to increase ego strength (or rational resolve). The mortal horse is deformed and obstinate. For instance, according to Freud, repressed thoughts “buried” in the unconscious are the result of the ego attempting to deal with unconscionable reality; and the sublimation of destructive, socially unacceptable desires is a product of the ego working harmoniously with the superego to direct the id in socially constructive directions. The charioteer’s destination?
This question has far-reaching implications for contemporary psychotherapy inasmuch as Freud's work has had profound influence on its development. Should You Lift Weights Before Doing Cardio? in: A Man's Life, Featured, On Manhood, On Virtue, Personal Development, Philosophy, Brett & Kate McKay Freud (1933) states: The super-ego is the representative for us of every moral restriction, the advocate of a striving towards perfection-- it is, in short, as much as we have been able to grasp psychologically of what is described as the higher side of human life (my italics). We get off track in becoming the men we wish to be when we succumb to vice (being overpowered by the dark horse), and we tend to succumb to vice when we forget who we are, who we want to be, and the insights into those two pieces of knowledge we have already attained and experienced. The white horse wishes to rise, but the dark horse attempts to pull the chariot back towards the earth.
Plato believed that discovering all truth was not a process of learning, but of remembering what one once knew. Sometimes Plato's division of the psyche into its three main elements can be easily misunderstood.
As for Freud's motive, or lack thereof, for not having addressed the demonstrable symmetry between the two models, I shall not speculate. He lets Reason rule, takes stock of all his desires, identifies his best and truest ones – those that lead to virtue and truth — and guides his horses towards them. As you’ll remember, in the allegory of the chariot, the chariot falls from the heavens when the horses do not receive adequate nourishment from the Forms, or when the horses rebel and the charioteer does a poor job of directing them.
Lust, when properly directed, leads a man to love, and Plato believed that beholding one’s lover was a central path to recalling the Beauty of the Forms, and regrowing one’s wings for another trip into the heavens.
